OUR SAILORS

PictureLWB Sailors Presentation to Secretary Terry
Sailability seeks to enrich the lives of people challenged by any type of physical or intellectual disability, the elderly, and the financially and socially disadvantaged. These are our sailors and our Monday sessions are  essentially for them. Many also come to our Sunday sessions.

We welcome busloads from Life Without Barriers in Batemans Bay and local like-purposed organisations, disability services as well as special groups from Batemans Bay High School.

OUR HANSA DINGHIES

Hansa 2.3 Underway
Sailability, Batemans Bay, is fortunate to own four 2.3 and four 303 Hansa
dinghies. We also are fortunate that two of our members own their own boats, and make these freely available to the club on our nominated sailing days. Our boats are extremely easy to sail for even the most novice of sailors. A 30kg centreboard ensures stability and makes the boats virtually impossible to capsize. Sailors sit in a comfortable, reclining position facing forwards and steer the boat using a simple joystick. All sailing adjustment is done from the cockpit.

Now sailed throughout the world, the Hansa has been designated an International Class by ISAF (International Sailing Federation), and regattas are held regularly at various venues in Australia and overseas.

The innovative design features of the Hansa make sailing safe, easy and fun and brings the sport and recreation of sailing within reach of anyone. The Hansa  is the ideal boat for anyone who is looking for safe simple fun on the water – regardless of ability.  Sailability has found the Hansa to be the perfect boat to introduce new participants to the fun of sailing.

In addition to their sailing vessels, the club also owns a powered support craft, as well as a smaller runabout which is manned by an experienced sailor, and used to ride alongside a dinghy where the skipper requires help or instruction whilst out on the water.

SAILING AREA

Sailabilty Batemans Bay launches their boats from the ramp and pontoon on the foreshore in Wharf Street, at Nelligen, just 8km from Batemans Bay. It is a safe sailing area, but to comply with various maritime and insurance regulations, our sailing area is confined to an area whereby boats are always in view of our support crew both on the beach, as well as those in our safety boats.

 SAFETY ON THE WATER

The Fleet Readies
Safety is paramount in all forms of sailing. Sailability recognises that our sailors have various levels of physical and sailing ability, and our goal is for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable sailing experience.

Our volunteers rig the boats, and sails, lines, and fittings are thoroughly checked before the boats are allowed out on the water.

Of course, personal flotation devices are a must, and no-one, experienced or otherwise is allowed out on one of our dinghies unless they are wearing one. We make these available to all our sailors.

PictureBeach Crew in Action
Our beach crew assists in helping sailors in and out of the boat, and in making sure they are comfortable and at ease. If you are already a competent sailor then you are free to take a boat out by yourself, but should you just want to enjoy the sailing experience of being out on the water, then one of our volunteer skippers will be only too happy to take you out.

PictureSafety Boat Squirt Stands By
Whenever a boat is out on the water, our safety vessels (Squirt and Jay Bee) will be in close proximity to assist, should any of our sailors get into difficulties or require assistance. For those sailors who feel reasonably confident of taking a boat out alone, but would just like an occasional guiding hand close by, we have a powered boat able to accompany them and offer instruction.
